Fact Sheet
SemiAlloGen is a privately held
biopharmaceutical company developing immunotherapeutic
products for the treatment of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease
(AD) the most common form of senile dementia. The Company
was formed in Charleston and incorporated in Delaware for
commercial development of research performed at the Medical
University of South Carolina (MUSC) on a proprietary
technology to produce therapeutic, adjuvant, and preventive
vaccines for the treatment of cancer and AD. This vaccine
consists of cell hybrids resulting from the fusion of a
unique, genetically-altered human cell line from our
laboratory (called Fo1-12) with cancer cells or white blood
cells (WBC) derived from the patient. We believe that these
hybrid vaccines will direct a powerful cell-mediated immune
response to destroy cancer or cells producing excess amounts
of the ß amyloid peptide (A ß), the causative agent of AD.
We have successfully completed a phase I trial (allowed by
the Food and Drug Administration – FDA) on patients with
metastatic melanoma in which safety of the vaccine was
demonstrated. We also discovered that our patented Fo1012
cell line expressed high levels of carcino-embryonic antigen
(CEA), a major adenocarcinoma-associated tumor antigen. The
FDA quickly agreed to expand the clinical studies to include
a phase I trial for patients with metastatic adenocarcinomas,
including colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancers. This
clinical trial, which involved the formulation of the hybrid
vaccine with the immunostimulating cytokine
granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF),
was also successfully completed
